Project Details
The Florawise Energy Optimization VR Showcase represents a significant endeavor in the realm of extended reality (XR) and game development, particularly in the application of virtual reality (VR) to showcase energy optimization solutions. This project, conducted in collaboration with Florawise, an International Building Energy Optimization R&D Company, spanned from 2022 to 2023 and utilized Meta Quest 2 technology. The initiative aimed to create immersive VR experiences that demonstrate practical energy-saving strategies, with a particular focus on retail store settings.
The project involved the development of a real-time VR environment using Three.js, a JavaScript library renowned for creating 3D graphics in web browsers. This choice of technology was strategic, enabling the VR experience to be accessible via the Oculus Browser on Meta Quest 2, ensuring a seamless, web-based interaction for users. My role was multifaceted, encompassing the creation and optimization of 3D models for retail store settings. This process began with the design of detailed models, such as shelves, counters, and lighting fixtures, which are typical in retail environments.
To ensure these models were suitable for VR, I employed photogrammetry techniques, a method that involves capturing real-world environments through 2D images to generate 3D models. This approach added authenticity, as the models reflected actual retail store aesthetics and proportions. For optimization, I reduced polygon counts and utilized texture atlasing to minimize draw calls, ensuring the models performed efficiently within the VR framework. This was crucial for maintaining smooth frame rates on Meta Quest 2, a standalone VR headset known for its balance of performance and accessibility.
The project culminated in an exhibition at the International Istanbul Retail Fair, a significant event for showcasing retail innovations. At the fair, attendees experienced the VR environment through Meta Quest 2 headsets, interacting with the virtual store to understand energy optimization strategies. The positive feedback received highlighted the effectiveness of our approach in communicating complex concepts through an immersive and interactive medium, validating the technical proficiency applied.
